Covering Gray hair color in Dallas is something many women rely on to maintain their image.  This is something that seems simple, but requires different color formulation to compensate for the loss of natural pigment.  Here is a simplified look at coloring gray hair color in Dallas.

Why does hair become gray?

As we age, the cells in each hair follicle that create melanin begin to stop production of  pigment.  It is a pesky, and almost always unwanted thing that happens naturally.  The age at which our follicles cease melanin production is something that is different for each person.  Some people start to “gray” in their teen years, and some start in their 40’s or later.

What color is best for gray?

Gray hair color can be colored, highlighted, and/or lowlighted as you choose.  Permanent hair color is usually required to penetrate gray hair and deposit enough artificial pigment for full coverage.  Highlighting is also possible to lighten any unwanted darkness or tones in your gray hair color.  There are many options for coloring gray hair that can achieve your desired look.

If you are not interested in coloring your gray hair color, then a semi-permanent clear gloss is also something to consider.  It does not alter the color of your gray whatsoever, just adds shine and helps smooth the wiry texture gray hair generally has.

How much is it to color gray hair color?

There is no additional charge, and this really depends on what type of hair color your desired look requires.  For a full list of color charges, see my menu for Dallas hair color pricing.

If you’re not used to getting Dallas blonde hair color, the whole process can be really confusing.  Should you get a partial highlight, or a full highlight?  What about lowlights?  What are they, when should you get them and how much are they?  Here I will simplify highlights in Dallas so you can feel more comfortable when visiting the salon.

What are Highlights & Lowlights?

Highlights are strands of hair that are lightened, with hair color or bleach, at least two shades lighter than the rest of your hair.

Lowlights are strands of hair that are darkened, with hair color, at least two shades darker than the rest of your hair.

Are the highlights light, natural or chunky?

This completely depends on what you are looking for.  Most trends today lean more towards natural, or finer pieces of highlighted hair.  However, there is always a place for bolder highlights.  Again, this completely depends on your preferences.

What is the difference between a Partial & Full Highlight?

These terms are used to describe the area of the head that is highlighted.

Partial Highlighs only cover part of your hair, generally from ear to ear and from fringe to the crown.

Full Highlights include having (up to) your entire head of hair highlighted/lowlighted.

Can I get Highlights & Lowlights?

Absolutely.  Partial and Full highlights are only used to describe the area that we are color.

The amount of highlights & lowlights that are done really depends on your desired look.  If you are looking for a very solid blonde look, more highlights are needed.  If you are looking for a natural look, then less highlights, and maybe even some lowlights are needed.  For example:

This look requires a full highlight – which only includes highlights.

This look requires a partial highlight – which includes highlights and lowlights.

This look is actually solid blonde, and is not done with highlights.  This is what is called a double process blonde.  Check out my other post for more information on double-process blondes.

How much are highlights and/or Lowlights?

Partial Foil Highlights start at $100.  Each additional color (lowlights) is only $15.

Full Foil Highlights start at $125.  Each additional color (lowlights) is only $15.

Have you ever thought about using hair extensions to add an Ombre hair color, highlights and lowlights, or bright neon colors to your hair? If you think outside the box for a minute, it makes perfect sense to use extensions instead of coloring your hair in certain instances.  Working at a Dallas hair color salon, I see several people a year who want to add a pop of bright neon hair color to their hair.  Lately, Pastel hair colors have been becoming more and more popular.  My clients absolutely love keeping their hair healthy with Ombre hair extensions in Dallas and using extensions for other hair color purposes.  Here’s why:

If you’re looking for highlights or an Ombre hair color style, this can very easily be done with hair extensions.  For Ombre hair styles, you almost always have to lighten the ends of your hair with bleach.  So let me repeat what I just said:  You almost always have to bleach the ends of your hair to achieve an Ombre hair color.  Yes, the same ends of your hair that bear the beating from your flat iron, curling iron, and last summer’s sun damage from all that time at the pool.  Instead of bleaching the ends to lighten them, you could very easily throw in a few colors of hair extensions so you get a soft, seamless transition from dark to light.  In doing this, your ends weren’t lightened and you spare yourself any further damage.  Plus, when you move on from Ombre hair extensions hair styles, we take them out and can easily change into the next upcoming hair trend of 2013.

If you want to throw in some highlights  or lowlights with hair extensions you should seriously consider a Highline system. Though it is marketed for adding volume on top of the head, this is an incredibly versatile system.  First of all, who doesn’t want more volume on top of their head?  Not only does it do that, it’s an amazing tool to either get darker or lighter than your natural hair so you get a hair color with dimension.  All without coloring, or highlighting your own natural hair.

On another note, if you are wanting to throw in pops of bright funky hair colors then you should definitely be paying attention to this!  I always recommend using hair extensions any time someone asks me to throw a little bit of bright rihanna red, or any other crazy hair colors like blue, green purple, etc.  Here’s why:

To get those funky neon or bright hair colors, your hair has to be lightened with bleach to remove any dark pigment.  Then, we go in and color your hair with what ever color you so choose.  All is fun and you leave the salon with bright funky hair color, but let’s fast forward two weeks later:  That bright funky hair color has faded incredibly fast, and your bright blue is now a weird green blue teal color.  Or that Red is now orangish yellow.  Not pretty.

Hair extensions that are pre-colored with these colors do not fade.  Yep, I said it.  Working with either Easilengths, or Hairdreams hair extensions I can pre-order fashion hair colors that will keep their bright colors the entire wearing time as if it’s always freshly colored.  Even if we have to color the extensions to make your custom hair color, we can start with the lightest of hair extensions so you get that pop of color without damaging the cuticle – which in turn means the color lasts much, MUCH longer.

Cost:

Not only can going this route be very similar to the cost of your hair color, you get results that last much longer.  Adding pops of color with hair extensions starts around $100 – yep, $100.  The best thing to do is to book a free hair extension consultation so you can see what best suits your needs.

Bead Weft Hair Extensions are a great hair extension option for women with normal to thick hair. These hair extensions use no heat, glue, or tape to attach to your own natural hair. They are a great way to add volume or length using no glue hair extensions Dallas.

What we like most about beaded weft hair extensions is the easy, quick, and seamless installation. Because there is no heat or glue, they are incredibly quick to apply. Due to the weight of the weft, and the link attachment, they are not meant for clients with thin or fine hair types. For someone with a fine hair type, consider hair extensions for fine hair .

More Information | Bead Weft Hair Extensions

How they work:
Bead Weft  extensions are made from great quality 100% Remy Human Hair. The Hair is attached on a very thin weft, which allows them to remain tangle free and look very natural. Silicone-lined links, which vary in color depending on the color of hair, are what secure your hair to the extensions. These extensions do not require heat when installed, so there is minimal damage to your own hair. The silicone inside the link protects your hair from the rough edges of metal, and prevents hair extensions damage.

How long they last:
After the initial application, bead weft hair extensions need to be maintained every 4-6 weeks. During this maintenance appointment, each link is re-opened, and the wefts are moved up. Keeping the weft closer to your scalp keeps them secure, and keeps them from being visible. The same hair extensions are worn for 3-6 months, depending on how well they are maintained.

How long is application?
For a full-volume application, it is usually 45 minutes. Full-length application usually takes 1.5 hours. These hair extensions with no glue are very easy and quick to install.

Do Bead Weft Extensions cause Damage?
When put on the right client, and they are maintained properly at home there should be no noticeable damage. This is where the importance of a hair extension consultation comes into play. You want to find the best hair extensions salon in Dallas for a free consultation. In a good consultation with a professional who is trained and certified on several options of hair extensions, you should not even be directed to try a system that would damage your hair.

The EasiPart by Easihair are great clip in part extensions in Dallas.  If you have thinning hair on top of your head, or if you need extra volume around your parting, Easihair makes this temporary clip-in system called Easipart. If you do not have any problems with thinning and just want something to help make your color last, this system clips directly where you part your hair. In times when your roots have grown out you can also wear this clip in hair extension to disguise your roots.

This system is very similar to the Hairdreams top hair top of the head hair extensions. Wearing permanent hair extensions on the top of your head can be tricky because of obvious visibility, unless you use systems meant to hide balding or thinning on top of the head. For a more permanent solution you should consider a Microline, Top Hair or High Line by Hairdreams.

The Easipart clip in temporary hair extension system is secured with four pressure sensitive clips. The 14″ human hair comes from a mono filament base, so the hair appears to come from a natural scalp. Also, the base of this system is incredibly thin and flat which really blends into your hair. Having 14″ hair not only adds volume to your part, but it also fills in your shorter layers which really plump up your style.

To get a better visual of how it looks in real time, watch the video below featuring the Easipart and Easifringe systems in action. Each top of the head hair extension offers similar results, however they target different problems. Easipart is a perfect solution for thinning hair on top of the head. If you have a receding hairline, or mild to severe thinning on top of the head, the Easifringe covers more surface area and might be a better solution.

For the best advice and direction on the best solution for your thinning hair, a free hair extension consultation is the best bet. As a hair extension and hair replacement specialist in Dallas, I am well versed on several options for all scenarios. I treat everyone with utmost respect, and am confident there is a solution for just about every person with a need. It is a great idea to do some research before committing, but much like self diagnosing your medical problems, it’s truly important to speak with a certified professional who can give you the best options for your unique circumstances. In doing this, you will do the best thing for your image, and avoid any possible hair extension damage.

The hairdreams highline hair extensions system is designed for top of the head fullness and scalp coverage at the crown.   For slight to mild thin hair around your crown, the Highlines hair volumizing hair extensions system is a great way to add significant volume and coverage.

About the Hairdreams Highlines Hair Extensions System

Hair extensions and hair replacement technology has made leaps and bounds with helping those who need more coverage and fullness on the top of the head.  Most traditional hair extensions systems are not designed to be worn on top of the head, but this system is.
The Highline is perfect for adding fullness to your crown area to add to your natural hair. Even if you don’t have thinning issues and just want to pump up your style, this system is an amazing way to add some body.

How it works

The Highline is a salon-installed extensions system that is attached to your natural hair much like the microline hair replacement system. Using a bonding ring, or mini hair extension beads, the piece is secured for 3-4 weeks.

Much like the Microline system, the Highline uses a net with hairdreams 7 star specialty hair attached. The net has spaces for your hair to be pulled through. This way the net works its way to your scalp, and the added hair and your hair blend together seamlessly.

Highline-Top-Piece-Dallas-InsideOut

Maintenance & Upkeep

After the initial application, you will need to have the Highlines piece maintained every 3-4 weeks. In this appointment, the piece is made sure to be as close to your scalp as possible so it always remains secure.  This system is designed for everyday wear for up to 9 months.

Highlines System + Hair Extensions

Since hair extensions can only be placed so far up the head so they aren’t visible, the Highlines system is designed to only fill in the top of the head, and add coverage around the crown.  If you also are needing to fill in your ends, it can definitely be worn with hair extensions.

One of our favorite brands of hair extensions is Hairdreams Hair Extensions.  Hairdreams offers hot fusion hair extensions, tape hair extensions, and top volumizer hair extensions for top of the head coverage.  Hairdreams is notorious for always offering the finest hair quality you can possibly find.  Here is a look into why we love Hairdreams

Hair Quality

Hairdreams hair extensions offer two hair qualities to best match to your own natural hair.  The hair qualities are labled “5 Star Quality” and “7 Star Quality.”

  • 5 Star Quality – This hair comes from China and is hand selected by Hairdreams strict quality control standards.  Since the hair is of Chinese origin, it is a thicker hair strand and is ideal if you have thick natural hair. 5 Star hair is available in these lengths: 12″, 16″, 20″.
  •  7 Star Special Quality – This hair is the absolute best hair you can get, from any company on the market today.   7 Star special quality hair has been hand selected, and sorted few hairs at a time to sort by quality, color, and length.  Once sorted, the hair is not chemically colored more than 1-2 shadesn only to modify the tone.  This hair originates from western European donors, which result in a fine hair strand that is perfect for someone with fine or thin hair.   Hairdreams even guarantees perfect 7 star special hair quality during the entire wearing period of 1.5 years.  7 star hair is available in these lengths: 10″, 14″, 18″, 22″

Application Methods & Options

Hairdreams offers several options when it comes to hair additions. Each offers different results, and here we will briefly explain each.

The most popular hair extensions method Hairdreams Hair Extensions offers is a hot fusioFusionn hair extensions system.   This is a single strand by strand method of adding hair extensions to your own hair.

Each hair extension strand has a tip that is used to attach to your hair. The bond tip is a thermoplastic nylon which softens with heat, and is wrapped around each section of your hair. When the nylon cools, it hardens and secures itself to your hair. There is no glue, or keratin used to adhere these extensions.

The difference between Hairdreams and other fusion hair extension systems is the way they attach to your hair, and how much is attached. Hairdreams offers different sizes of bonds so they really can be customized to your own hair type. There are regular, medium, small, and super-small bonds. This gives each hair type from very fine, or thick and coarse a match that prevents visibility.

Another benefit of Hairdreams is their thermoplastic nylon attachment. What does that mean? Basically, think of nylon: a fabric used in most athletic wear clothing. This fabric stretches, yet is very secure. Instead of using a glue or keratin bond like most other systems, the nylon bond is safe and secure, yet flexes and is removed easily.

tape hair extensions

Hairdreams also offers a version of tape hair extensions that uses their 5 star hair quality.

How long they last: 4-6 weeks.  These extensions are reusable, and can be re-installed once new tape is applied.  This keeps them close to your scalp, which adds comfort and keeps them discreet so they aren’t visible.

Who are they best for: Tape hair extensions are ideal for almost all hair types.  Here is an in-depth explanation of tape hair extensions.

Hair Loss & Thinning Hair Extensions

Hairdreams offers 3 types of Hair loss & Thinning Hair Extensions for top of the head coverage and fullness.

What are Vomor hair extensions? They are a version of Tape hair extensions that are so popular right now. The difference with Vomor is they are exclusively done at Aveda salons. As a hair extension specialist in Dallas, tape in hair extensions are something I offer to many clients who want fuller thicker hair.  Here is why I recommend having your hair extensions in Dallas done by a specialist, instead of a national chain.

1.  Time and Experience = No Headaches and Damage

Being the new kid on the block, I welcome Aveda to the hair extensions game. I love hair, hair extensions, women who wear them, and people who do them well. Having said that, I know how many YEARS it takes to actually learn the in and outs of doing hair extensions well.

Applying hair extensions properly so as to not cause damage is something that takes years of practice.  While they are marketed to be damage free let me make it quite clear: every type of hair extensions can definitely cause damage if applied incorrectly, or to the wrong type of hair, and/or not properly maintained.  It takes years of experience to learn which extensions are best for different hair types.

 2.  My golden rule: One Size doesn’t fit all with Hair Extensions

My other issue is that Aveda is only doing one type of hair extensions for clients: Vomor tape in hair extensions. One of my golden rules for hair extensions is to always demand options, and never trust a one size fits all approach.   When someone only does one type of hair extensions, you should get out of the chair and run! There is no one-size-fits-all hair extension system. Think of the logic: Does it make sense to put the same type of extensions on someone with thick curly hair as you would on very fine thin hair?

All in all, I will sum it up by explaining my thoughts on Vomor tape-in hair extensions. While tape in hair extensions are great for a specific client,  it’s best to work with a extension specialist who uses several types and brands of hair extensions. In my honest opinion, having worked with several brands of hair extensions (including a tape in method) having options is the best way to go about hair extensions. When you have options in attachment method: clip, tape, links, fusion, wefts, you can really get a customized solution that best suits your own natural hair type.

In other words: do your research, and look for a hair extension specialist who offers options in your area.
