Bigger Better Hair | Tape in Hair Extensions | How To Maintain in Tape Extensions

Congrats on your new hair extensions! Adding more hair can take some time to get used to.  In this post I am going to go into depth on how to maintain tape hair extensions so they always look amazing, and last you as long as possible.

I highly encourage that you invest fully in your hair and purchase each tool I will mention. Depending on your hair, some of these product recommendations may change, but these are my “go-to” recommendations for how to maintain tape extensions!

PRODUCT MUST HAVES

#1 Framar Wet Brush

Tape in Hair Extensions | How To Maintain in Tape Extensions

Framar Wet Brushes are an extension wearer’s best friend. Unlike any other brush, their bristles are much more flexible and are designed to not pull as hard on your hair which prevents breakage.

When using your Framar wet brush, don’t be afraid to brush thoroughly. I’m talking right over the panels of your extensions, because the bristles are so flexible there’s no way they can tear your hair out.

Brushing Your Hair Extensions : Tips and Tricks:

  • Start by brushing your ends first and working your way to the top. This will ensure that no breakage occurs, and you are not rough detangling your hair.
  • When using your wet brush, don’t be afraid to brush thoroughly. I’m talking right over the panels of your extensions, because the bristles are so flexible there’s no way they can pull your hair extensions out.
  • One of the most common mistakes we see is someone not brushing enough, and we have to detangle 6-8 weeks of not brushing at your maintenance appointments. Trust me: don’t be afraid to brush!

#2. Arrojo Gentle Shampoo and Conditioner

Let’s talk shampoo and conditioner. At Bigger Better Hair we have a luxury product line called Arrojo. Any of their shampoo and conditioners are extension friendly, and they are hands down the best shampoo and conditioner for extensions.

Tape in Hair Extensions | How To Maintain in Tape Extensions

The entire line is free of sulfates, parabens, and harsh chemicals. They also contain skincare grade ingredients and are clinically proven to improve your hair quality.

Washing Your Hair Extensions : Tips & Tricks

  • Your tape extensions should not slip out, as they are held together with medical grade tape. If they start to slip, there’s a reason. One of the biggest causes of slippage is oil or conditioner has touched the tape. To prevent this, don’t wait too long in between shampoos, as this creates build up of your natural oils which in turns causes slipping.
  • Also, make sure you don’t condition your hair near the wefts, or apply any sort of shine, conditioning, or smoothing product near your roots. You should only be applying your conditioner and leave in from mid lengths to your ends. In other words, no higher than where you can put your hair in a pony.
  • When shampooing, don’t be afraid to get in there and scrub between your extensions. Personally, I will take a dime size amount of shampoo, emulsify it in my hands, and shampoo in between each panel. If you don’t do this, you risk oil building up which can cause your extensions to slip.
  • Last but not least, make sure you are thoroughly rinsing all your shampoo/conditioner out. Think of when you are rinsing a dish in the sink, you rinse until the water runs clear. Same thing with your extensions. Rinse completely to avoid product build up, as it can make your hair feel waxy if you do not.

#3. Leave in Conditioner & Treatment Oil

It is very important to apply a leave in conditioner on damp hair after shampooing your hair. This will protect your hair and keep it moisturized between washes. There are a variety of leave in conditioners for each hair type.

Tape in Hair Extensions | How To Maintain in Tape Extensions

My personal favorite leave in cocktail for frizzy hair, is the Living Proof Restore Perfecting Spray paired with the Arrojo Shine Lux Oil. They both offer thermal protection and frizz-free hair for up to 72 hours.

Applying a generous amount of oil to the ends of your hair to keep the extensions soft, moisturized, frizz free. As a bonus, this also offers thermal protection up to 450 degrees.

Styling Products : Tips and Tricks:

  • Make sure you only apply leave in conditioner ponytail down. As mentioned above, if you put it any higher, it will cause slippage.
  •  For the best results I recommend applying oil and a leave in on damp hair ponytail down
  • After styling you can also apply a pea size of oil to your ends to make it shiny and keep it frizz free. Or you can use a dry oil spray which makes sure you never over do it.
  • In between shampoos, you can apply a few drops of oil to your ends to keep it fresh and break down any product build up.

Common Questions:

How should I wear my hair when sleeping?

I recommend brushing it out and securing it in a low pony or loose side braid. This will prevent it from tangling and will keep it contained.

How often should I be shampooing my hair?

This varies from person to person. Someone with very oily hair will need to wash more often than someone who does not get oily as fast. A good way to tell if it’s time to wash is when your hair starts to lack volume and is starting to get oily. You should at least be washing it at least 1-2 times a week.

Can I put my hair up with extensions?

Yes indeed. You may have to do some detailing with a brush to hide the tapes. For this I recommend using the Spornette Little Wonder Brush. Its bristles work great for smoothing the hair.

Can I workout with my extensions?

Yes, just make sure you secure it back in a low pony or braid. If you workout everyday, instead of shampooing every day, try rinsing thoroughly and applying conditioner to the ends every other shampoo.

Are tape extensions human hair?

100%. This means you can pretty much do anything with them that you can with your regular hair.

How much are Tape In Extensions?

The best way to gauge the cost, is to come in for a complimentary consultation so that a stylist can recommend which of our services will work best for you. For a general idea of our services, our price menu lists all of our services and pricing.

How long does the hair last?

Each new set lasts anywhere from 6 months to a year depending on how well you take care of your hair.

How often do I need to get them moved up?

Any salon extension needs maintenance every 6-8 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows, your stylist will recommend coming in at 6 weeks the first time and from there you can decide if 6 weeks works, or if you could go 7 or 8.

What if one of my tapes slips out?

In the case that this happens, feel free to reach out to the salon and ask for a quick fix. You can pretty much get in same day and it takes less than 15 minutes.

That’s It!

Now that you know exactly how to take care of your extensions, have fun with them! If you have any other questions or think I missed something, feel free to let me know. And if you’re in the DFW area, and want beautiful hair, come see me at Bigger Better Hair! I would love to make your hair dreams come true!

Dallas Hair Salon

Working behind the chair as a stylist, I often get asked what the current Hair Style trends are in Dallas.  In this post, I am going to list what I am seeing and hearing clients ask for when it comes to 2019 color, cut, and hair extension trends.

As always, let me know if you have any other ideas! If you are looking for a stylist in Dallas, I would love opportunity to make your hair Bigger or Better at our top rated Dallas Hair Salon.

Color Trends

Icy blonde | Cool toned blondes are still in

If your goal is to have an icy blonde with no “yellow,” most people will need more than one process to remove all of the warmth in your hair. There’s two ways to achieve an icy blonde:

  • Low Processing & Slow Results – This is the ideal way to maintain the health of your hair. Set a goal color, and I will help you with a timeline. We can plan slowly lightening your hair in segments so we maintain a healthy blonde.
  • One Visit + Multiple Processes – If you are looking to achieve a major color change in one day, we need enough time for it. To do a major change in one visit, I can book multiple processes back to back for you so we can make it happen. For example, the blonde pictured above needed 3 back to back services, which came with a hefty price tag, but she wanted icy blonde in one day.

Bronde | For the Blondeish Brownish kind of girl

Bronde is personally my favorite color trend. It’s the perfect mix between blonde and brown.

This color is perfect for those who are currently blonde or brunette and are needing a change.

How to achieve: Book a “Balayage Partial” appointment and we can discuss what it would take to get to your future “bronde” color.

Lived In Balayage | The Best of Both Worlds

Lived in balayage isn’t necessarily a certain color, it’s customized to each person to add brightness 1-3 shades within your color and only needs to be touched up every so often.

How to achieve: Book a “Balayage Full” appointment so we have more time to balayage, and/or add a root color to customize a “lived in” look for you.

Cut & Style Trends

Blunt Bob

Loving this edgy blunt bob. It’s super on trend right now and I’m obsessed

Looking for a major change? We partner with Children With Hair Loss, a hair donation company who donates wigs to kids every year until they turn 18. If you are loving this cut as much as I am, book a hair cut appointment and let’s make a change!

How to achieve: To style yours like the picture above, I would suggest a round brush blowout, or a low temp flat iron to smooth your hair without taking the body out.  Style using Alterna Caviar CC Cream and Smoothing Gelee for form and smoothness.

Lob

Pr(lob)ably my favorite trend ever. Anytime someone comes in wanting a Lob, I’m convinced that I need one too. I might be one client away from getting the cut myself! .

How to achieve: It’s easy, book a haircut! Lobs look great straight or wavy, but for waves, I love a big barelled curling iron so it’s not “too curled.” Finish with Alterna Caviar Perfect Texture Spray and your waves look more undone than perfectly polished.

Textured Shoulder Length or Longer

Whether it’s shoulder length or longer, textured layers are in. They give movement and body and help hold your curls.

How to achieve: Let’s be honest, long hair is always in style. Current trends still show lots of movement and texture, so I definitely recommend a natural amount of layers and movement in long cuts. Not having enough movement in your long hair can take it from sexy to blah.

2019 Hair Extensions Trends

Skinny Hand Tied Extensions

Skinny hand tied extensions are perfect for adding thickness and a little bit of length. I wear them myself and they are one of my favorite extensions. They’re super low profile and make it easy when putting my hair up. For someone with normal to thick hair, they are definitely worth a try!

How to achieve: Before it’s time for your next “new hair” appointment, ask us about our Hand Tied Wefts to see if they would work for you! Check out my youtube video on our hand wefts!

Skinny Tape-Ins

Skinny Tape-Ins are best when wanting to fill in trouble areas or wanting a dramatic length/thickness change. They are also super low profile and are our most popular extension service.

How to achieve:

First book a consultation so your stylist can recommend the right service according to your needs. This service can be achieved in as little as 1-2hrs. Check out our video on Skinny Tape Extensions!

Hidden Crown Halo

Hidden Crown Halo Extensions are super on trend and are best suited for one who loves added length and thickness but doesn’t want to commit to wearing extensions full time. They can be thrown in anytime your style needs that extra “oomph.”

How to achieve: Schedule a consultation so your stylist can recommend the right hidden crown according to your needs. Once purchased, you can throw in and out to vamp up any style.

Dallas hair extensions

If we all were Kardashian’s with a stylist doing our hair everyday, clip in’s would be amazing.  But we’re not, and they aren’t cool anymore.  I mean, who hasn’t tried to do the perfect sections for a clip in, and experienced that clip-in headache?  If that’s what someone wants, we’re here to help you find the best set!  But in all honesty, if it comes to it, all of our stylists agree:  Hidden Crown Hair Extensions are the absolute best In&Out option of hair extensions!  There’s no comparison whatsoever.  Here are some things we love about Hidden Crown Halo Extensions, and tips from a Hidden Crown Hair Extensions Dallas Hair Stylist.

What is a Halo or Hidden Crown Extension?

One weft of hair that sits temple to temple using the shape of your head, your hair over the weft, and a nearly invisible wire that holds it in place from the top of your head.

If you have ever worn clip-in extensions, what makes them uncomfortable are the clips which grip on to your hair and the weight of the wefts pulls your hair.  Oh, and let’s not forget the constant concern of clips slipping from your hair.

Hidden Crown Halo extensions sit on your head comfortably, and can be installed super easily by even the most hair illiterate.  (That’s where we step in with our customization & tutorial service)

We offer complimentary consultations to help guide you to the best product from the brand that suits your hair type, length, and end goal.  Then, usually 2-3 days after ordering, we customize your halo at a separate appointment by perfectly sizing it, and cutting it for a perfect blend.  In the In&Out extension customization appointment we completely show you the “in’s and out’s” of wearing, styling, and installing your halo.  If, in the odd chance your halo needs a perfect color blend by one of our stylists, we will let you know at your customization appointment beforehand.  (This is very rare, btw.  99% of the time there is a perfect color match.  But we are a no-suprises salon!)   As with all of our hair extensions services, we guarantee color match, blending haircut, and resizing.

What to Expect

Hidden Crown Halo extensions are a great option if you are looking to quickly put on and take out your extensions on an “as needed” basis.  They can be worn daily without risk of damage and are very easy to install, and maintain.  In our experience, someone is either looking for salon installed, or in&out extensions, so this is something for you to consider about Hidden Crown’s.  They are the best option for someone looking to take in and out, but no in&out extension gives all the perks of salon installed extensions.

What Lengths are Available?

Halo / Hidden Crown Extensions come in 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24″ long.  They also come in different densities, from a natural tapered end to a double density fullness.  Different brands offer different price points, color options, and halo styles.  In a free consultation appointment, we will show you the differences, talk out your needs, and show you exact prices for the halo that matches what you need.

Do you carry Halo’s in stock?

We keep different lengths, and densities in stock to help show you the differences.  Since there are so many lengths, densities, and color options, it is impossible to have every halo in stock at all times.  We do our best to expedite the delivery after order, and we normally can schedule your customization 3 days after your consultation.  Overnight shipping is an additional charge based on carrier rates.

When shopping for hair extensions and wigs you will see options that are labeled Human Hair, Synthetic Hair, and Heat Friendly Synthetic Hair extensions and wigs.  We all know what human hair is, but here we will touch on the differences between human hair, synthetic hair, and heat friendly synthetic hair.  Here is our FAQ and answers to your questions about synthetic hair extensions and wigs.

Human Hair

Human hair extensions and wigs are made from real human hair that is identical to the hair that grows on our own selves. It can be washed, heat styled, over and over until the hair is over-processed and needs to be replaced. For professionally installed hair extensions, the only option to ever consider is a human hair version. This is an absolute must because we have to wash our hair, and you will most likely heat style your hair regularly. Both synthetic options are not intended for such use.

What are Synthetic Hair Extensions and Wigs made of?

Synthetic hair extensions and wigs are made from non-human materials that mimic the look and feel of natural hair. They are made from acrylic, nylon or polyesters that are heated and are thrusted out through special micro tubes that make the look and feel of individual hair fibers.

Why would you consider synthetic clip in extensions or wigs?
Synthetic hair is the most popular and most used type of hair extension and wig in the industry because they are affordable and reliable. Synthetic hair also offers ease-of-use because you can wear them without any styling effort because they come pre-styled. The style pattern (wavy, curly, straight etc.) are permanently set and will go back to its original shape even after washing.

With the advancement in technology, synthetic hair can now compete with the real thing. High quality synthetic hair (like kanekalon) can almost imitate the look and feel of protein-rich natural hair and fool even some of the most experienced hair stylists. As a matter of fact, you will not think of them as faux hair until you put it side by side a human hair for close inspection.

What is the difference between Synthetic and Heat Friendly Synthetic?

Both synthetic and heat friendly synthetic wigs and hair extensions are made from similar materials that are not human hair. The main difference is Synthetic hair can not tolerate the heat from hot tools like a blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron. Heat friendly synthetics, however, are able to be blow dried, curled, and flat ironed to change the style on an as needed basis. Generally, heat friendly synthetics require a low-heat setting so as to not melt the fiber.

The benefit of a synthetic fiber is that you don’t ever have to worry about styling the hair. The drawback is you are limited to one style. This can also be seen as a benefit if you are looking for ease of use. Synthetic hair is the most simple of options since you aren’t required to style it to have a believable look.

The benefit of a heat friendly synthetic fiber is you have flexibility in the style and can alter it from one look to another using your hot tools. Some, who are looking for ease of use, can see this as a drawback since these fibers can require some styling after each wash to get the perfect style you chose when purchasing your hair extensions or wig.

Dallas hair extensions | Ponytail Extension

Truth be told, not all of us are born with full, thick hair. Thin-haired ladies know that creating the perfect ponytail is no easy feat. If you have one of those days when no product seems to work in pumping up your hair volume, a ponytail hair extension is your next best bet. Ponytail hair extensions are one of the easiest ways to add fullness and length to fine or thin ponytails. They come in a variety of lengths and thickness to suit your current hair length and texture.

Who

Ponytail hair extensions are great for a girl on the go, looking for a quick style accessory that dramatically adds to your ponytail.

When

We don’t recommend wearing a ponytail hair extensions every day, since that is not how they were designed.  Ponytail extensions are designed for on-the-go easy styles.  They are great for special occasions, or the occasional night out.

What

Ponytail extensions come in synthetic and human hair options.  They use a comb clip that hooks onto your own ponytail, and a few bobby pins for extra security.

How to Wear

Step 1: Prep

Prep your hair with volumizing products so your hair isn’t silky smooth before you start.  Dry shampoo, Texturizing spray, or hair powders are a great way to add grip and texture to your hair for extra volume.  It also helps ensure the clip on your ponytail extension stays secure into your own hair.

Step 2: Ponytail

Use a strong elastic band and tightly secure your hair into a ponytail in your desired placement.

Step 3: Add Hair Extensions

Hook the metal comb on the base of your ponytail extension directly into the elastic band of your ponytail.  Then, wrap hair around the base of your ponytail to secure it to your hair and hide any wefting at the base.

Once you purchase clip-in hair extensions, then it is time for a hair extensions customization.  This usually requires a blending haircut, tutorial, and any additional hair color services for clip-in extensions that may be necessary.  All brands of clip-in hair extensions come in different colors, but sometimes they need to be colored for a perfect color match.  In this instance, we offer services to help perfectly blend your hair extensions into your own hair.  Here we explain the hair color services for clip in extensions that we offer.

Toning and Gloss Color Services

If your clip-in hair extensions need a simple toner, or gloss service, we are very experienced with coloring hair extensions.  We can color your clip-in extensions to add extra gloss, or change the tone to cancel any unwanted tones.

Highlighting

We never ever recommend bleaching hair extensions.  This severely diminishes the quality, and the life-span of your beauty investment.  We highly advise against this, and only suggest toning, or adding a darker tone to hair extensions.

Lowlighting

We can definitely add lowlights to help add dimension and perfect color blends to help naturally blend into your own hair.

How to Color Clip-In Extensions

We generally will only color clip-in hair extensions that are purchased through the salon.  The reason for this is because we know each brand that we work with and its capabilities.  Since we offer a perfect color match guarantee, we will only be able to extend this to products that we sell through our preferred vendors.

For a list of our services and pricing, refer to our salon menu for pricing.

Dallas hair extensions

Curious about tape hair extensions in Dallas?  Here is a simple look into tape hair extensions, how they work, and how they stay in your hair.

How do Tape Hair Extensions work?

Tape hair extensions usually have a very flat base, also known as a seamless skin weft.  This attachment base is made out of a polyurethane so as to keep the hair extensions in-tact and allow the tape to stay adhered.  The tape is usually a medical grade, hypoallergenic tape.  Two panels of these wefts are sandwiched together with a very thin slice of your hair in between the tape.  This means the tape is taped to tape, and your hair is just holding it in place.  No tape, or glue is exposed to your natural hair or scalp

After 4-6 weeks of wearing, the extensions are very easily removed in the salon.  While your hair color is processing we replace the tape, and re-apply the same extensions for another 6-8 weeks of wearing.

Will they Damage Your Hair?

Absolutely not.  Tape hair extensions are a great option for all hair types, especially someone with fine or thin natural hair.   Seamless tape hair extensions are also incredibly flat, and comfortable wearing.

How long does it take?

Application is very quick: 30 minutes to 2 hours.  Removal: 15 to 45 minutes. Reapplications usually last 1hour-2 hours.  (Not including color)

How much do they cost?

Request a complimentary consultation with one of our stylists to get a fully accurate price based on your current length and your hair goals.

If you have done your research on hair extensions, you will see many terms that describe the hair such as virgin, remy, cuticle.  Here, we will dive into virgin hair extensions and take a simplified look into what virgin hair really is, and why it’s so important to hair extension quality.

What is Virgin hair?

In the salon, if someone says your hair is “virgin” that simply means it hasn’t been touched by any sort of checmical.  Virgin hair extensions generally refers to hair that has zero processing – chemical, or hair color.   If this is true, the hair is the exact same color as it was when someone donated it.  Once hair color, or any chemical straightening has touched virgin hair extensions, the hair is no longer virgin hair.

As can be imagined, virgin hair extensions are very rare, which equates to low supply and high cost.  Virgin hair is the best quality hair extensions you can buy yet they are also the most expensive.

Do you need Virgin hair extensions?

While virgin hair extensions are rare, and of the highest quality, there comes a point where you have to ask: how good of quality do I need? In other words: Is there much of a difference between an Infinity, and a Lexus car?  Also, you have to consider the legitimacy of what hair extension companies claim they offer.  Since virgin hair extensions haven’t been colored, do you really believe there is a huge source of 22″ long blonde hair extensions that they got from a blonde ponytail?   If a company promises 100% of their hair is virgin, and they offer multiple colors of hair extensions, we tend to not believe these claims.  Anything is possible, but this is highly unlikely.

All in all, Virgin hair extensions seem to be something brands have thrown out there as a marketing gimmick.  Virgin hair extensions do offer amazing quality, but this quality can only be found by very very few vendors, and only in the darkest of hair colors.

We only work with brands that guarantee the quality of hair.  What this means is, while the hair may not be truly virgin, they stand behind the quality of hair with a warranty.  The hair comes pre-colored, and we can match it to your own color.
