One of the best things about wearing synthetic wigs is their ease of use and simplicity. Synthetic wigs are known for being simple and effective since the style is locked in, and they do not require (or allow) heat styling. Here are our best tips for maintaining synthetic wigs.
Always Remember
A synthetic wig is NOT heat friendly; do NOT use curling irons, flat irons or blow dryers on synthetic wigs. Heat will damage the synthetic fiber and can drastically reduce the life span of your wig. This also includes ovens, stoves, campfires, or anything of extreme high heat.
Storing Synthetic Wigs
We recommend storing your wigs either on a stand, mannequin head, or if need be, in the original box. Ideally, your wig will be stored with the hair fibers falling in a natural manner, and not being tossled, tangled, or rubbed frequently. When your wigs are drying, on a stand, we recommend storing it in a room with natural air flow.
Washing Synthetic Wigs
Step 1: Degangle the wig before washing
To detangle, always use a wide-tooth comb not a brush. Start combing the strands at the ends, and begin working up towards the base as it becomes detangled. Once you are confident there are no tangles:
Step 2: Prepare Water & Shampoo
In a sink that can be plugged, add your wig shampoo to cold water as your sink fills with water. We recommend using the equivalent of a dime size amount of shampoo if you were putting it in your palm. Fill your sink with enough water to cover the wig, but not too much to dillute your wig. Mix your water/shampoo mixture with your hands to ensure it has mixed well.
Step 3: Submerge your wig
Submerge the wig into your soapy water. Hold your wig underneath the water to ensure it has completely been covered with your mixture. Allow to soak for five minutes.
Important Tip: Be certain to not massage, rub or aggressively agitate the fiber. The goal is to minimize tangling during the shampooing process.
Step 4: Drain, Rinse and Dry
Drain the soapy water from your sink, then rinse the wig with cold water to remove all soapy water. Gently dab the wig with a towel to remove excess water. Do not squeeze or twist. Do not attempt to comb or detangle while the hairpiece is wet.
Liberally spray the wig with your wig leave-in conditioner and allow it to dry completely on your wig stand.
Step 5: Detangle
Once your wig is fully dry, use a wide-toothed comb to detangle. Your spray leave-in conditioner can be used again to lightly add moisture that aids in the detangling process. The wig detangler is meant to help soften the fibers and dry with a natural look and feel on the strands.
Styling Synthetic Wigs
In many ways, synthetic wigs are easier to handle than human hair. This low-maintenance fiber bounces right back, “ready-to-wear” after washing because the style is heat-healed into the fiber. Most of the time, even after washing, your wig will return to its original style without the need to do much work.
If you want to change the style of your synthetic wig, always remember to never use hot tools like flat irons, blow dryers, or curling irons on a synthetic wig. To change the style of your wig, we recommend using a wig steamer to help. Steamers are a great tool with synthetic wigs because they offer just the right amount of heat to help smooth the fiber, or change the style. Steaming a curly wig can make it straight, or you can use a steamer to make a straight wig curly.
Coloring Synthetic Wigs
Synthetic wigs are not human hair, which means they can not be colored. While synthetic fibers are meant to mimic the look and feel of human hair, it is impossible for them to be colored. An added benefit of synthetic wigs is their color is baked into the fibers which results in minimal, to zero fading, which means your wig will always look beautifully colored.
